(CMR) Mayor of Roatan, Honduras, Jerry Hynds who was arrested in a major drug bust last month has been freed.
According to the Centinela Informativo, the country's National Court concluded the initial hearing in the matter against Jerry Dave Hynds, Jorge Bustillo, Efrain Sanchez and Francisco Gomez, all arrested on Friday, August 27, 2021 , in a police operation headed by the ATIC Technical Investigation Agency, National Police, among others.
All four were charged with committing an aggravated drug trafficking crime. However, in that police operation, Efrain Sanchez and Jerry Hynds were not found with anything unlawful in their respective vehicles. They were still arrested and placed on the order of the National Court.
After a long initial hearing in the Tegucigalpa capital of the Republic, the judge of the National Court decided to give Provisional Release to Hynds and Sanchez.
Provisional dismissal means that the case is closed, but could be re-opened if new relevant information comes to light. The provisional dismissal is usually done when a crime has been committed but it is not clear what role a person plays, if any.
Jay Hynds, son of the mayor of Roatán, told a local news outlet, ′′ Firstly I want to thank God because he heard our cry, I always believed in my father, but at all times we tried to be strong as a family because we knew he was innocent of what he was accused of… But thank God, this morning my father regained his freedom, proving he's innocent.
“I also want to thank those who in one way or another showed us their affection during this process, my family thank you and will never forget these expressions of sincere support from the island population and other parts of Honduras and countries that also support my father.”
Eva Cerrato, a cousin of Efrain Sanchez, said that ′′ As a family it was a week of a lot of distress to see how they exposed our family, accuse him of something he did not do. It is difficult but we know our cousin for that reason we support him and thank God he is now free, God heard our cry and we have received our requests “.
