(CMR) Matriarch of Chisholm’s Grocery Mrs. Rhoda Erena Ebanks (née Chisholm) passed away on Thursday, 6 January at 91 years old. Chisholm’s Grocery recently paid tribute to her in a Facebook post.
Mrs. Ebanks was instrumental in running Chisholm's Grocery, which was opened by her parents on 13th August 1954. Back then, it was known as ‘the shop.’ She helped her mother, Mrs. Ida Chisholm, in the shop throughout the years until her passing in 2005.
Ms. Erena, as she was affectionately known to many, then took over running the store and did so until 2013. She loved being at the store, constantly meeting new people, and making new friends. Of course, conversing with local folks was a highlight of her days as well. Even though she hadn’t been at the store for some time, she kept abreast of what was happening there daily.
When it became necessary to hire staff, she was apprehensive about it but went along. She has met each employee and regularly inquired how they were doing and has often said, ‘thank God we found them.
Chisholm’s Grocery said the store was near and dear to her heart, and present staff will do their best to continue the legacy left by Ms. Erena and her parents.
Meantime, Chisholm’s Grocery has announced that the funeral service for Ms. Erena will be held on Friday 14th January 2022 at 10 am at William Pouchie Memorial Church in North Side. Chisholm’s Grocery will be open from 7 am to 9 am and reopen at noon on that day so that staff can attend the funeral.
The store thanks the public for understanding and supporting them during this difficult time.
