(CMR) The Cayman Islands Football Association Men's Premier League match between Academy and Bodden Town at the Annex field ended after a brawl left the referee assaulted earlier this evening.
Exclusive CMR sources indicate that recently appointed UK referee, Ben Whitty, was injured and required treatment at the hospital after benched players ran onto the field and attacked him. He was initially punched and then kicked eyewitnesses revealed. We understand the altercation occurred towards the end of the match with only 15 minutes remaining. FIFA selected him about one month ago. There is not a full indication at the extent of the injuries sustained however, he is said to be undergoing x-rays and an ultrasound at the time of publication.
CIFA is investigating the incident but our sources indicate video footage showing player Michael Martin from Bodden Town first hit the referee followed by some of the other players.
The referee is a seasoned professional with 16-years of experience and is scheduled to be a FIFA tournament in Jamaica next week.
This is a developing story and will be updated when more information is available.
