(CMR) The Cayman Islands Red Cross (CIRC) has launched an appeal to support the victims of Hurricane Eta in Central America. The official death toll is thus far 150 people.
They have shared that the full impact of the category 4 hurricane is not yet known but rapid initial assessments from Red Cross officials on the ground have identified as many as 1.7 million persons affected in Honduras, 30,000 persons in Nicaragua, and 144,000 persons affected in Guatemala.
In Honduras, flooding has left thousands trapped for days without food or water and reports are that the death toll may never be known. Whilst the official death toll there remains relatively how early estimates are that the economic toll will be worse than that of Hurricane Mitch. Mitch was considered the most destructive storm to ever hit Central America. The 1998 earthquake killed over 11,000 persons and was the deadliest Atlantic hurricane in 200 years.
It left more than 1 million people homeless.
It may be days or even weeks before the true extent of the damage is known, but constant rains even after the storm has passed, means that strong currents and landslides continue to destroy homes, farmland and sadly, to take lives.
CIRC’s Eta Appeal will be limited to monetary donations only as this has been proven to be the best way to assist vulnerable people and to effectively respond to such a crisis.
