(CMR) Before he was permanently banned from Twitter, President of the United States, Donald Trump tweeted that he would not attend the inauguration ceremony for President-elect Joe Biden.
“To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th,” Trump tweeted.
He is the first departing president since 1869 to refuse to attend his successor's inauguration.
President Trump's announcement came one day after releasing a video condemning his supporters for their violent attack on the U.S. Capitol earlier this week.
The president provoked the violent protest at the Capitol on Wednesday, as he pushed for the election result to be overturned. However, on Thursday, he promised a peaceful transition.
Political commentators have since called Trump's comment of a peaceful transition ingenuine as he has publicly declared he would not attend Biden's inauguration.
Biden, speaking in Delaware, later Friday, said that Trump not coming to his swearing-in ceremony was “one of the few things we agree on.”
