Cayman's Premier Alden McLaughlin has issued a stark warning against undertaking humanitarian projects into Tortola at this time because of the looting and crime on the island. This came after mass requests for supplies to be delivered to Polar Bear location in Industrial Park this morning was widely circulated. Read here
This warning was shared via a WhatsApp community group called “Prospect Community” and read:
Hi everyone. Yesterday I spent 2 hours on a video conference call with the CARICOM Heads of Government getting an assessment of the situation in the islands affected by the passage of Irma. Not good.
The FCO is coordinating the relief effort for the UK Territories, BVI, TCI and Anguilla from Cayman. We have deployed the police helicopter and crew to TCI. Yesterday Cayman Airways flew an armed police unit to Barbados where they will be picked up by the RAF and taken to Tortola, BVI. Matthew Forbes, the Governor's Staff Officer has been deployed with them.
Not possible to fly into BVI yet. Massive security issues. Looting and robbing. All prisoners on the loose. Police have deserted en masse. Bermuda is sending officers too. In addition, there are 100 UK marines and 55 UK police officers also underway to BVI. We are looking to fly into Anguilla on Tuesday with medical supplies and personnel.
CMR will provide any further updates that are issued from the Premier's WhatsApp group.
