(CMR) A long-serving member of the Legislative Assembly assaulted a bar manager at Coral Beach on West Bay Road tourist strip last night just before 11:00 pm.
Exclusive sources indicate that the politician was intoxicated and had fallen on the floor. Sources indicate he had been on location from before 4:00 pm drinking. When the manager attempted to assist him in getting up an onslaught ensued. The assailant proceeded to pull her hair and strike her multiple times in the face whilst barraging her with verbal insults about her management skills.
The incident was witnessed by multiple persons including locals and tourists. One source said possibly over 50 persons may have witnessed the assault and she sustained bruises all over her neck, arms, legs, and face.
CMR understands there is also a video floating around of the incident. Initially, the victim was not going to contact the police but eventually decided to lodge a report and asked for the person to merely be cautioned. A caution means that they will not be arrested or charged in the matter.
We understand he may have been drinking prior to showing up at the establishment. Sources confirmed her injuries were mostly to her face and she was visibly bruised and shaken afterward.
Eyewitnesses shared that they were shocked at the assault and dismayed to hear that it was a politician that was involved. One person noted:
“We all have wives, sisters, aunts or grandmothers. This lack of response for women and physical violence against them is very shocking and to think they will not face any legal consequences of a public assault simply proves how little has improved when it comes to violence against women in this country. Sadly, this government would not be prepared to do anything about the matter.”
CMR waits to see if the PPM coalition government will have any comment. Dart Group is the property owns but we understand the bar is owned and operated by Caymanian businessmen.
We understand that CCTV footage was obtained that caught the entire incident.
UPDATE:
The police have since confirmed that they are now investigating the matter after receiving a complaint. They shared:
Just after 12:30 am today, Saturday 22 February police received a report of an incident that took place at a liquor license establishment on West Bay Road. It was reported that a public figure in the Cayman Islands had assaulted a female at the location resulting in her receiving minor injuries.
