(CMR) A plane carrying 126 people burst into flames after a gear collapsed from its nose during landing on Tuesday at a Miami International Airport runway.
Local news reported that three persons aboard the RED Air SRL 203 arriving from the Dominican Republic suffered minor injuries. The plane which landed 5:30 pm reportedly crash-landed.
Alfredo Machado, a passenger on the plane, told ABC News that he felt the plane shaking and heard a loud noise during the landing.
“Something sounded like something broke or something gave up, and the plane went down on the left side and started spinning, and we went to the grass. After that, we saw smoke and flames, and we got out of the plane through the emergency exit on the window, on top of the wings, and then from the wing, down,” he said.
Erika Benitez, a spokesperson for Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue, said when fire crews arrived on scene, they saw the wing of the aircraft was on fire. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters also worked to contain the fuel spillage. A federal team will continue the investigation on Wednesday.
The Miami Herald reported that the plane “scraped” the south runway closest to Perimeter Road, nearest the DolphinaAZ Expressway but hit nothing else. Officials had to,close two runways, delaying several flights; however, the busiest section of the airport was not affected.
