(CMR) The COVID-19 Dashboard for the Health Services Authority reflects that as of Tuesday morning 68% of the persons currently in the hospital were unvaccinated individuals. The number of hospitalized COVID patients also dropped down to 19 from the previously reported 21 with one of the hospitalized being a child on the pediatric ward. One person remains on a ventilator.
13 persons out of 19 were unvaccinated and no one was recorded as being partially vaccinated leaving only 6 COVID-19 hospitalized persons being fully vaccinated as of yesterday.
There were also four persons discharged in the past 24 hours while two additional admissions were recorded.
Four individuals are on the Critical Care Unit whilst the vast majority are on the general ward. One person remains on a ventilator. CMR understands that person is part of the vocal anti-vaxxer group in the Cayman Islands and was refusing treatment from the HSA before demanding she is given Ivermectin. Her daughter sent out a message on Sunday requesting prayers as they were going to ventilate her. She is known to have a pre-existing condition making her extremely high risk.
According to a Healthline.com article from March of this year, a mechanical ventilator is a device that pumps air into the lungs of a person with severe respiratory failure.
“COVID-19 can cause respiratory symptoms like coughing, trouble breathing, and shortness of breath,” the website said. “In severe cases, it can lead to a life-threatening condition called acute respiratory distress syndrome.”
The article also stated that being put on a ventilator is considered a high-risk procedure because of potential complications, and it also puts health care workers at risk by exposing them to the virus. The high mortality rate for patients means that ventilation is sought as a last resort from a medical perspective. Even if one survives after being put on a ventilator, they could still face long-term and possibly lifetime effects such as a significant amount of fibrosis in their lungs or a significant loss of lung tissue; often requiring a lung transplant.
According to a study out of Florida mortality rates reported in patients with severe COVID-19 in the ICU range from 50–65%. In patients requiring mechanical ventilation, mortality rates have been reported to be as high as 97%. Another study placed it at around 50%.
