(CMR) Sources have now confirmed that the government will be extending the Christmas break by two weeks as previously shared on Monday for the government schools. However, there will be no e-learning component for students during that time.
It was previously reported that students would be expected to attend online classes during that time. However, well-placed sources are now saying that no such option would be available.
Sources have updated us with some further details that indicate two days will be removed from the half break term and the school term would be extended by almost two weeks until June 30.
CMR sources shared that various scenarios were presented and approval was granted by the Minister, Hon Juliana O’Connor-Connolly to make the following adjustments to the school calendar:
1. Term 2, originally slated to commence on January 4th, 2021, will start on January 18th, 2021;
2. Half-term in Term 2, originally slated for February 15th to 19th, has been adjusted to February 18th to 19th 2021, commencing after the Ash Wednesday Public Holiday on February 17th, 2021;
3. Term 3 will be extended from Wednesday 30th June 2021 to Tuesday 13th July 2021;
4. Three storm contingency days have been added to Term 3 – 14th, 15th and 16th July 2021. With the above adjustments, the school year will end on Friday 16th July 2021.
At this time government has not officially confirmed anything. However, via another media house they shared:
“The Ministry of Education and Department of Education Services (DES) confirm that they are presently in consultation with government schools to extend the Christmas break by two weeks,” officials said in an email to CNS Wednesday. “As a consequence, there will be changes to some key dates during the 2020-2021 academic year. The ministry will update the public once the new dates are confirmed.”
Parents had originally contacted CMR about lacking options during the extended break. However, we have also been reliably informed that several camps may open up to assist parents.
