(CMR) Ombudsman for the Cayman Islands, Sally Hermiston, on Monday said her office would be launching an investigation, following a recent incident involving Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) officers pursuing a number of motorcyclists in the Newlands area, which resulted in a crash.
Cayman Marl Road on April 4 reported that a police chase in the Newlands area had resulted in a motorcycle collision.
“In light of the significant public interest in this matter, and the unprecedented police power during the coronavirus pandemic, the Ombudsman has decided to investigate the actions of the police on her own initiative, ” read a release from the Ombudsman's office.
According to Hermiston, investigators from her office are currently awaiting the arrival of a number of initial documents, recordings and statements from the RCIPS to assess the circumstances and determine additional investigative requirements. Hermiston further noted that her office would not be providing a comment regarding the investigation while it is ongoing; but a public report would be made available upon the matter's conclusion.
