(CMR) Thirteen deportees, described as “serious foreign criminals” arrived in Jamaica on a flight from the UK on Wednesday (December 2).
The deportees, all men, were initially to be a part of a group of up to 50 Jamaican nationals to be removed from the UK, but last minute legal challenges resulted in some being granted reprieve.
The men who arrived at Kingston's Norman Manley International Airport at around 7:30 a.m. were later transported to a local hotel where they will remain until their COVID-19 test results have been received.
According to Minister of Health, Christopher Tufton, depending on the outcome of the tests, the men will be released to quarantine at home for the standard 14 days.
A UK Diaspora advocacy group has since written to Prime Minister Andrew Holness requesting that his administration, going forward reject any such future flights.
Head of the group, Angela Jameson, noted that given that over 50% of those who were scheduled to be deported were able to legally challenge that ruling was indicative of the fact that the practice must be done away with.
