(CMR) Cayman Marl Road received a frantic call shortly before 2:00 pm this afternoon from concerned parents that there was a rumor of a lock down at John Gray High School off Walkers Road in George Town.
Apparently a co-worker had shared that she heard there was “a gun man on campus and as a result the school was locked down.”
CMR sought to verify this immediately and our sources quickly confirmed that there was some robbery related incident in the vicinity and as a result of that there was heavy police presence on and around the campus.
While the government nor the police have issued any sort of statement; CMR has now obtained an email that was sent out all parents from St. Ignatius school earlier this afternoon confirming that an incident did take place. The email states that the police contacted them and that police were on the campus as well. It also noted that this was not to be considered “normal operation” at the school. It did not provide any further details.
However, a parent at that school indicated that children actually observed a strange looking man walking on the school field during lunch time. They are concerned that school security or administration did not appear to have noticed his presence. Later on several parents saw the police placing a knife in a plastic glove after finding it on the school compound.
At this point this is no confirmation from authorities if the alleged robbery in the area is also related to these further sightings.
VERDICT: There appears to be SOME truth to this rumor except it was likely a knife involved and not a gun and at no point were the schools on any sort of formal lock down.
UPDATE: The RCIPS eventually issued a statement about an assault incident.
Separately the Education Ministry provided additional details and referred to the incident as a lock down confirming that the intruder was spotted by a member of staff who alerted senior team colleagues and security.
“A decision was made to implement a lock-down of the campus, which restricts movement of all students and staff until the campus is deemed safe. No contact was made with any of the students,”
the statement added.
The Ministry said after the RCIPS gave senior staff approval for movement to staff and students “transitioned to their final lessons without any delay or disruption to learning.”
