(CMR) Officers of the RCIPS Firearms Response Unit (FRU) will soon be more easily identifiable as the unit introduces new specialist uniforms that will be rolled out this June.
The new grey-colored uniforms, which will replace the existing navy blue uniform, have been specifically selected to differentiate members of the unit from other units within the RCIPS and other local law enforcement and government agencies.
“The FRU is the primary armed law enforcement entity in the Cayman Islands and it is imperative that FRU Officers are distinguishable because of their unique roles and responsibilities. The older blue uniforms are very similar in color to those used by a number of other government agencies, whereas the new uniforms are unique to the FRU only. This will allow for officers within the unit to be easily identifiable to members of public, other agencies, and internally within RCIPS,” said Inspector Damenian Maxwell, Chief Firearms Commander of the FRU.“
The design and features of the new uniforms were specifically selected following a rigorous research process conducted with FRU team leaders in consultation with the members of the unit and the Commissioner of Police.
The new FRU uniform is primarily grey in color with dark-colored accessories and includes a long-sleeved shirt for operational use, or a darker grey colored polo shirt for standard duties. Shirts feature the RCIPS logo and the name of the Firearms Response Unit for easy identification.
New tactical equipment has also been introduced, specifically a new design of ballistic vests and helmets. The vests will improve officer mobility and comfort, both when conducting foot patrols and when traveling by vehicle, while also providing a greater degree of protection.
The vests are prominently labeled on both the front and back with “Firearms Response Unit” and “Police,” contributing to the goal of increased identifiability.
“The public should expect to see members of the FRU on duty in these new uniforms in early to mid-June,” Commissioner of Police Derek Byrne said.
“This new FRU uniform and kit will distinguish RCIPS FRU from other agencies and entities across CIG and will provide for greater awareness and heightened visibility in our communities as our armed officers go about their business protecting communities and in the prevention and detection of crime,” he added.
The new uniforms are also being gazetted in legislation specific to the RCIPS FRU.
