(CMR) Nadia Powery (35) stole $19,000 from Saxon Insurance Company while on bail for stealing USD$370,000 from Cayman Villas it was revealed in court on Friday as deliberations begin for her sentencing month.
She previously pleaded guilty to the first theft in January – but was disputing the exact amount. Details emerge last week in court when Powery admitted to stealing large sums fo money to fund a lavish lifestyle. She admitted to writing cheques out to her fiance and friends. Her employment was terminated and the matter reported to the police. Apparently, after being fired from Cayman Villas she secured another job working with the insurance company and within several months stole from them as well.
At Saxon Insurance she did not disclose that she was under investigation in the other matter and would reverse payments to carry about her thefts. Powery would accept insurance payments from clients and provide them with a receipt. She would then reverse the payment and re-apply it for a lesser amount and then keep the difference for herself. This deception was carried out more than 160 times.
Her lawyer, Richard Barton, argued that her thefts lacked sophistication and asked for leniency for the mother of five; who has a special needs child. He argued that she suffers depression, anxiety and has a history of abuse. Despite that the prosecution said the money was used for vacationing and living a lavish lifestyle.
