(CMR) A recent report revealed that microwave energy was the likely cause of a mysterious illness that afflicted US and Canadian diplomats in both Cuba and China.
During the period late 2016 to May 2018, at least 26 foreign diplomats reported feeling intense head pressure, dizziness, cognitive difficulties among an array of other symptoms while working stationed at either the US consulate in Guanghzhou, China or the US Embassy in Cuba.
In some instances, US diplomats reported hearing high-pitched sounds similar to crickets which led to an early theory of a sonic attack.
The US National Academy of Sciences committee in a release on Saturday (December 5) noted that the symptoms of the diplomats were likely caused by “directed” microwave radiation.
The report went on to note that the symptoms were similar to the type of injuries reported by some who lived in the former Soviet Union.
The committee said that it faced major challenges in compiling its report, noting that researchers did not have access to previous studies on similar illnesses, adding that many of those documents were listed as “classified”.
The National Academy of Sciences is a United States nonprofit, non-governmental organization charged with providing independent, objective advice to the nation on matters related to science and technology.
