(CMR) In the United States, crime rates have dropped significantly across the nation including homicide rates. In a shocking revelation today it was disclosed that Miami, Florida has experienced a record drop in crime and for the first time in 63 years they have experienced no homicides for seven consecutive weeks.
The details were revealed by the Miami Police Department which revealed that for the first time since 1958 there have been no homicides for over six weeks as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. They shared:
“We can say that it's due to our police visibility, attributed with the pandemic and the Stay At Home order.”
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez declared a local state of emergency on March 12 to slow the spread of the coronavirus, and the order has since been extended six times in week-long increments.
From February 17 until April 12 of this year — a total of seven weeks and six days — Miami had no reported homicides, according to police. In 1957, the city went 9 weeks and 3 days without any reported homicides. In 1960, a period of 6 weeks and 5 days passed without a homicide.
The department has also reported decreases in the number of domestic violence calls. However, authorities remain concerned that those along with child abuse cases may be underreported at this time. According to the CDC intimate partner violence affects 12 million people a year.
Crime reports also indicate that assault, carjacking, robbery, and shootings have all gone down in major cities Maryland. When compared to the same time last year, common assaults in Baltimore went down 34%, aggravated assaults went down 17%, and shootings dropped by 8%.
Los Angeles also reported that violent crime was down 9.73% overall with homicides decreases by 21%.
