(CMR) An Austrian man on a Belize island by himself sent a distress signal by Facebook after he was shot multiple times by gunmen who stormed his private residence last month.
In an interview with Love FM News, Christian Gusenbauer (46) recalled the horrific incident on Private Heaven Caye off the Placencia peninsula's coast.
The gunmen reportedly shot Gusenbauer approximately 21 times before escaping with his boat and a sum of money.
An emotional Gusenbauer said he thought he would have died, and so he called his children while waiting for help to let them know he loved them.
“I did not know if I would survive because of the loss of blood and so I decide that I would call my children,” he said.
Gusenbauer said he managed to escape from the men after his dog Mali attacked one of the men. However, the men pursued him and shot him several times inside his home.
“I had no cell phone connection out there, but I had internet; that's why I texted on Facebook ‘Help! Help me. I got shot',” Gusenbauer recalled using Facebook to call for help after being shot.
He said he barricaded himself in a room, but this did not stop the bullets from getting to him.
The hotelier, who described his attackers as monsters, said he managed to press himself against the door while using one hand to type on Facebook.
Gusenbauer, who has lived in Belize for the last four years, said he did not understand the nature of the attack as he has always tried to help the community.
“I don't have any enemies, so I don't have in mind that someone want to kill me,” he said
He believes the men aimed to take his boat and not leave a witness behind.
The police rescued Gusenbauer over an hour after making the post on Facebook. His dog Mali also survived the ordeal.
