(CMR) The prison has officially confirmed that a prisoner has died as reported on CMR on Wednesday evening.
Officials with Her Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service have confirmed the passing of an inmate on Wednesday evening (18 December 2019) at the Northward prison compound. The prisoner, Durney Ebanks (52), was found lying unresponsive on his bed by two prison officers. The officers applied lifesaving measures prior to the arrival of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) several minutes later.
An ambulance transported the inmate to the Cayman Islands Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Per established protocol when there is a death in custody, the RCIPS has confirmed that an inquiry is ongoing, but at this time no foul play is suspected.
CMR sources indicate it appears that he had a heart attack at the prison. He had been in prison on a number of occasions over the years.
