(CMR) 27-year-old Tarrick Kevin Crawford of West Bay has been formally charged with causing death by dangerous driving and inflicting grievous bodily harm in relation to Cayman's first fatal collision for 2021 that occurred on 16 January on West Bay Road. He is bailed to appear in court on Monday, 20 September.
Shayne Anthony Ewart (24) of West Bay was killed in the early morning accident. Police reported that at about 12:15 am, officers were conducting a vehicle checkpoint on the northbound lane of the Esterley Tibbetts Highway in the vicinity of the Yacht Club Roundabout when a green Honda Accord traveled through the checkpoint, ignoring officers’ instructions to stop.
Officers activated blue lights and sirens and followed the vehicle at a safe distance; however, they soon lost sight of the vehicle, and the decision was made to return to the checkpoint.
At about 12:20 am, the 9-1-1 Communications Centre alerted officers to a single-vehicle collision on West Bay Road, in the vicinity of Willie Farrington Drive, involving a green Honda Accord which had collided with a house. Police and Emergency services attended the location, and three occupants of the vehicle were transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital. Ewart, who was a passenger in the car, was subsequently pronounced dead.
The Office of the Ombudsman conducted an investigation as several alleged eyewitnesses had said the car crashed while being chased by the police.
