(CMR) Logic has served legal documents against locally owed C3 to prevent them from continuing to air FIFA World Cup games on their local TV network in a lawsuit filed last week.
The Writ of Summons was filed last week Wednesday, July 4th by WestTel Limited T/A Logic against Infinity Broadband Ltd. T/A C3. Both entities are local telecommunications providers that offer both internet and cable television services. In the legal documents Logic asserts that DirectTV Latin America, LLC has the exclusive license to broadcast the World Cup Media Rights in the Latin American Region; which includes the Cayman Islands. Direct TV granted Logic the exclusive sub-license to “certain of the World Cup Media Rights in the Cayman Islands”.
Logic is accusing C3 of infringing those copyright rights as a result of their broadcasting the first game on June 14 on it's CTV channel. In the statement of claim, Logic alleges that an email was sent to C3 requesting that they cease and desist from broadcasting future games of the FIFA World Cup. They received replies from C3 stating that they would comply. However, the court documents claim the infringements continued the following day and that as the filing of the Writ C3 has aired most of the 57 games.
The logic was requesting a restraining order to prevent C3 from airing any further World Cup games and asking for damages and interest.
