“We must work together to take litter law enforcement seriously”
Alric Lindsay
(CMR) George Town South hopeful Alric Lindsay has highlighted an ongoing concern of his – the pollution in the Cayman Islands. He has suggested the long-awaited district councils could be a useful tool in tackling the enforcement aspect of the issue.
Lindsay spent the weekend with Protect Our Future, Plastic Free Cayman, and Cathy Childs of National Trust cleaning up debris both Saturday and Sunday morning.
On Saturday the groups headed to Bodden Town and did the Moon Bay to Everyglo beach areas. They discovered a large amount of debris brought ashore from Hurricane Delta and discarded by local residents. Alric shared that a lot of need bottles and even a canoe were hauled in.
On Sunday morning he headed back out to continue collecting garbage with the NPO's at the North Side beach coastline areas. Lindsay shared that based on the labels it appears that some of the debris has washed ashore from elsewhere. However, it does appear that local polluting is also a very real concern.
He sincerely believes that using the district councils as a community-based accountability system for issues like this could be incredibly useful. He applauded the NPO's for their ongoing efforts but thinks there must be an ongoing effort to increase enforcement. Lindsay shared that:
“where there is deliberate dumping, we can have plainclothes officers present to obtain direct evidence. There has to be some serious enforcement in order to clean out our environment. The perils of pollution go far beyond just being unsightly. The garbage can seep into the ground and pollute our waters, get into the oceans and impact our wildlife and much more. We must care about this earth far more than we currently do.”
Lindsay encourages people to join groups such as Protect Our Future, Plastic Free Cayman, and Cathy Childs of National Trust who are dedicated to doing what they can to clean up. He concluded:
“we have to get out there as a community and help as much as we can. We have to live here for the rest of our lives so let's take care of our islands.”
