(CMR) Cayman's national shotput record-holder Lacee Barnes could be competing at the Olympics in Japan this Summer.
The five-time CARIFTA Games medalist set a new national shotput record in January when she threw 14.70 meters at the H-Town SpeedCity Series II at the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse.
She later set a national discus record in April, throwing 51.52m at the Texas A&M Team Invitational. This was also a record throw for her school, The University of Texas, San Antonio, where she's excelled as a student-athlete.
Barnes could represent the Cayman Islands at the Olympics which is expected to be held from July 23 to August 8. However, uncertainty still looms over the Olympics as several persons are of the view that it should be canceled in light of a recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Tokyo.
Barnes recently completed her studies at UTSA, where she majored in communication. She was a volunteer student intern in the UTSA Athletics Communications Office. She also earned the Most Outstanding Sophomore award in 2019 at our University Excellence Awards ceremony and aspires to pursue a career in public relations or communications.
