(CMR) Cayman resident, David McGibbon, captured some amazing footage today of six killer whales (orcas) earlier this afternoon a few miles off East End, Grand Cayman.
The group was aboard two Ocean Frontier’s boats today when they saw this spectacular view.
McGibbon was surprised and shared “we got so lucky seeing them”.
The group of boaters could be heard cheering when the whales surfaced.
In the past few weeks there have been numerous sightings of the pod of orcas in Cayman waters. Last week drone footage from Chris Briggs was in wide circulation. An additional footage from a boat said to be taken by Captain Charles Ebanks was also shared a few days ago.
Sighings in the Caribbean Sea are not unheard of but it remains an amazing experience for many to see them so close to Cayman. They tend to be spotted in the East End area as they migrate through.
A pod of killer whales were spotted back in October 2012 and the previous three years before that.
It is likely they are migrating before the winter months. DoE always recommends people take footage of the orcas from a safe distance. Their fin can assist with identification.
People who sight them are encouraged to report those to DoE via email or calling 949-8469.
