Keeping safe this Halloween weekend

(CMR) With the upcoming Halloween activities that will be taking place this weekend, the RCIPS has issued some safety tips and reminders for both the traditional Halloween activities and adult social gatherings.

Motorists are asked to drive with extra care and vigilance to look out for children walking on the roadways across the Cayman Islands. Persons should also expect delays in traffic in areas known for having Halloween events.

Parents are reminded that while walking with their children, they should ensure that they walk facing the flow of traffic and retain proper control of their children, not allowing them to venture onto the roadway and put themselves at risk. It is also recommended to wear reflective clothing or carry lights of some kind in order to be seen by motorists.

It is also advised that children do not knock at doors for treats after 9 pm unless it is clear that the occupants are still awake and accepting visitors. You should also only attend residences and locations that indicate that they are participating in Halloween activities. Likewise, if you are quarantining in a private residence, are vulnerable, or have health concerns, you need not open your door to trick-or-treaters or find a safe way to do so – stay safe.

The police will also like to remind members of the public to be cautious when parking and leaving their vehicles for an extended period, especially in unfamiliar areas. Ensure that valuables are not left in the vehicle and that your vehicle is parked in a well-lit area.  If possible, park your car in the view of surveillance cameras.

Damage to property and disorderly conduct is an offense in the Cayman Islands and anyone vandalizing or damaging property will be dealt with as they would be on any other night.

The RCIPS is also advising that people exercise caution throughout the weekend by not drinking and driving, staying together with their group of friends, and looking out for each other.

Do not leave your drinks unattended, be aware of your surroundings, and have a plan to get home safely.

The public is also reminded that Public Health regulations for COVID-19 still apply when attending Halloween events. Find out more at www.exploregov.ky/government-covid19-policies.

The RCIPS wishes everyone a safe and fun Halloween.
