(CMR) Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won her fifth 100m World Championship title on Sunday as Jamaica swept the event in Eugene, Oregon. She is the only athlete to have won the 100m world championship title five times.
The 35-year-old mom finished in 10.67 seconds, beating Shericka Jackson by 0.06 seconds, while Thompson-Herah finished a surprising third in 10.81.
“So many people believe that when women turn 35, it somehow diminishes our gift, our talent. But I'm still able to line up and compete, and that is very special,” Fraser-Pryce said.
After having her son Zyon in 2017, many feared the outstanding athlete would not be able to reach the top again; however, she has proved them wrong, winning two World Championship titles since then. Fraser-Pryce had an emergency C-section when she had her son and took two years away from the track to rehabilitate and focus on motherhood.
“Whenever I'm healthy, I'm going to compete. I'm hungry, I'm driven, and I always believe I can run faster and I'm not going to stop until I stop believing that,” she said following her victory on Sunday.
“To continue to do it at 35, having a baby, still going; hopefully, I'm inspiring women that they can make their own journey,” Fraser-Pryce stated.
The same three Jamaican athletes completed a clean sweep of the medals at Tokyo 2020, with Fraser-Pryce coming second that day. Thompson-Herah won gold, while Shericka Johnson won bronze.
