(CMR) A police detective whose child died after he went to work forgetting she was in his car is to be charged with manslaughter, Jamaica's Director of Public Prosecution has ruled.
Detective Sergeant Sheldon Dobson, attached to the Black River Police Station in St Elizabeth, reportedly forgot his one-year-old daughter in his car in January on the station compound between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m, Jamaica Gleaner reported.
The infant, who was found in the vehicle unconscious, was rushed to the Black River Hospital, where she was pronounced dead during treatment. Dobson was expected to take the child to the daycare but went to work, forgetting he had the child with him. Both of the child’s parents are reportedly employed to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
The child who was usually taken care of by her grandmother was on her third day in daycare when the incident occurred. Reports are that her grandmother had become ill and so her parents had to enroll her in daycare.
Persons said Dobson was a caring family man and would not have deliberately or recklessly left his daughter in the car.
“I know people are going to say she is a child and how could he forget, but sometimes even your phone is in your hand and you are looking for it,” a family friend told the Gleaner.
