(CMR) Jamaica will pay between $250,000 and $500,000 for illegal weapons in a bid to bring the country's murder statistics down. Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness announced the campaign to remove illegal guns from the country's streets on Friday.
With the country recording over 100 murders in the first month of 2022, the PM said this is part of the Government's strategy to fight crime.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force seized over 80 guns last month. That trend has continued into February.
On Thursday, 10 rifles, two sub-machine guns and a pistol were seized by the police in a middle-class community in Florence Hall, Trelawny. One man was fatally shot during the incident and a female arrested.
Commissioner of Police Major Anthony Anderson said the recovery of the gun in a middle-class community showed that gunmen were moving outside volatile areas.
