(CMR) A police officer assigned to Minister of Finance Dr. Nigel Clarke's security detail was killed in a fiery crash on Thursday while escorting the Minister.
Sergeant Marlon Smith (49), who was assigned to the Protective Services Division, was traveling in a Suzuki Vitara motor car along the Coopers Pen main road in Trelawny, heading in a westerly direction at about 5:40 pm when he collided with a Honda CRV motor car and a motor truck.
The police officer's car ran off the road and burst into flames. Smith, along with the other two drivers, was transported to the hospital, where Smith was pronounced dead.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness said, “Sergeant Marlon Smith was one of the kindest, most considerate, and most genuine persons anyone could have the pleasure of meeting. He had a ready smile and a heart of gold.”
“The news of his passing was deeply saddening, and I express my deepest sympathies to his family and Jamaica Constabulary Force colleagues,” Holness added.
