(CMR) As of Thursday (October 8) Jamaica has recorded well over 7,000 cases of the coronavirus, with 128 virus-related deaths.
Despite the alarmingly high number of cases, Jamaica is back to business as usual, with citizens required to wear masks and a 8:00p.m. curfew in effect for all parishes.
The social distancing measures, such as standing 6 feet apart remain both difficult to monitor and maintain, with even government officials seen flouting the rules as they lean in closely for photos.
What's more is that in recent days Jamaica has seen a rise in COVID-19 clusters, with a business process outsourcing (BPO) company forced to close after 18 of its employees tested positive for COVID-19, and Jamaica's House of Representatives under a cloud of suspicion after a parliamentary marshal who was in close contact with legislators tested positive on October 6.
The new cases particularly on the western end of the island has forced the opening of a new COVID-19 ward at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
According to the country's Ministry of Health and Wellness two more field hospitals are being setup in addition to the one at the National Chest Hospital provided by the United States which is not yet operational.
