A judge of the Cayman Islands Grand Court was arrested Monday night on suspicion of drunken driving following a crash on West Bay Road.

According to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, the one-vehicle wreck happened around 10:15 p.m. when the vehicle collided with a wall in the vicinity of Lime Tree Bay Road.

The driver, a 52-year-old woman, was arrested shortly after the crash, suspected of driving under the influence and careless driving. Her identity was not released by the police. She had not been charged at press time.

She was released on police bail overnight. No other vehicles were damaged or persons harmed in the collision.

“The driver is a judge of the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands,” RCIPS noted in its statement.

After some research we can confirm the judge is Ingrid Mangatal. She has a long history in the legal profession and was appointed in January 2015 as a permanent judge as having served in various temporary capacities. She was a Supreme Court judge in Jamaica.

Mangatal is a graduate of the Norman Manley Law School, who was called to the Bar in 1987. In 2000 she was appointed a resident magistrate. She also served as senior assistant attorney general, and director of litigation in the Attorney General's Department.

Mangatal served on the Supreme Court Bench in Jamaica from 2003 to 2014. She was appointed on several occasions to act in the Court of Appeal and was acting from January to September this year when she went on leave.
