“This proposal, however, is emphatically not one that the UK Government wishes to take forward and neither has the Cayman Islands Government indicated any desire for it. It raises significant practical challenges. It is therefore very unlikely to proceed further or be debated in Parliament.”
Christine Rowlands, Head of Governor's Office
(CMR) The Governor's Office has addressed concerns over a recent bill that proposes to incorporate the Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies into the UK's parliament by giving them their own MP. However, the proposal was met with criticism by both local and international members of the OTs and CDs.
The Governor's Office has reassured the people of the Cayman Islands that this bill is merely a proposal by a few MPs in the UK and does not represent an agenda by the government locally or in the United Kingdom. In fact, they have noted that on occasion this suggestion has been made over the years but continues to find little favor with the majority of the people or their representatives.
Acknowledging that it might be borne out of a desire for some MPs to be inclusive it appears that it creates other issues not fully appreciated by the proposers of the bill and is unlikely to be successful at this current time.
The matter discussed this morning on another local talk show program with some possible misinformation being disseminated to the general public and the governor's office is keen to reassure the general public of what the UK's position is.
The Manager of the Governor's Office, Christine Rowlands, issued the following statement on the matter:
