(CMR) The PACT Government is working to have single-use plastic bans implemented by the third quarter of this year, Premier Hon. Wayne Panton has said.

“What I have indicated to my team is that I want to have single-use plastic bans in place in the third quarter. That is the target we have,” Mr. Panton, speaking on Premier Access with Sandra Hill on Wednesday evening, said.

He said other countries have successfully implemented single-use plastic bans, so it can be implemented successfully in Cayman.

“We are definitely going to get it done by the end of this year,” Mr. Panton said, acknowledging that the previous government had started work to end sing-use plastic.

The Premier said a ban in Cayman would not stop plastic from being in the sea, but everyone has to play their part.

“We've got to change the way we do things; we can't just go for convenience to get things done. We got to go and do things deliberately and recognize that we have a planet and an environment and an ecosystem to respect and protect because it enables us to survive, ” he stated.

The Premier also recognized the recent swim of Oly Rush, who is partnering with Plastic Free Cayman to raise awareness about plastic pollution.
