(CMR) The free meal program in public schools which started last September with students in primary schools and the Lighthouse School has been extended to include all government schools as of 21 March.
A letter sent to parents of students at Clifton Hunter High School on Wednesday stated that the government of the Cayman Islands recognizes the importance of a healthy diet and proper nutrition for children and made the decision to provide free meals to students while at school. Children attending government schools will be provided with breakfast, snacks, lunch, and drinks daily, the letter said.
The program will be managed by the Ministry of Education and parents were told to send queries to [email protected].
According to the letter, a meal management system will be used to better administer the meal program. This interactive system will allow parents to view menus, order meals (in the case of primary schools and LHS), and view their child/ward’s meal consumption patterns.
Meals for students in primary schools and at the LHS must be pre-ordered, preferably at least a week in advance. Students in secondary schools will not pre-order but must order at the point of sale. Swipe cards that will be used to order at the point of sale will be issued to secondary school students at a later date.
Parents will be required to sign up to use the system to ensure that their child gets the best the program has to offer as of 21 March. A valid email will be needed to sign up. On sign-in, parents will be able to add all of their children, regardless of school or grade. Parents are encouraged to fill in as much information as they can when prompted and add a picture to their child’s profile once their account has been created.
