(CMR) A four-year-old boy died at a Jamaican hospital on Sunday, hours after his stepfather reportedly beat him for eating slowly.
The boy, Nashawn Brown, lived with his mother and stepfather in Spanish Town, St Catherine, Jamaica Gleaner reported. The police questioned both adults, and the stepfather was taken into custody.
The police are awaiting a post mortem before charges are made.
Reports are that the child complained of feeling ill and was eating slowly. This angered his stepfather, who used a piece of stick to beat him severely, causing bruising and swelling all over his body.
According to the Jamaica Gleaner's report, the mother of the child was also physically assaulted by the man when she tried to get him to stop beating the child. The man hit her over the head with the stick before using a piece of metal to hit her all over her body, causing bruising and swelling.
The child was found breathing slowly in the bathroom by his stepfather. He later became unresponsive and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
