(CMR) A former councillor attached to Trinidad and Tobago's United National Congress (UNC) party was stabbed at a political rally over the weekend.
58-year-old Phillip Gonzales is still in hospital following the incident with sources close to the matter revealing that Gonzales had to undergo surgery but remains in “stable condition”.
Reports are that Gonzales was stabbed at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night at a rally in Moruga
Gonzales was inside a maxi-taxi during a motorcade when a man entered the vehicle and began arguing with him.
The confrontation escalated and Gonzales was stabbed four times in the chest.
The suspect then fled the scene.
Gonzales was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital for treatment.
UNC party officials have reported that the election season was particularly violent, noting that several of their supporters were targeted.
