UPDATE: Sixteen people were injured, 10 suffering from gunshot wounds, in an attack at a subway station in New York on Tuesday morning.
(CMR) At least five people have been shot and 13 injured in an attack at Brooklyn subway station early Tuesday morning.
Reports are that the attack was carried out by a man in a gas mask and orange construction vest who may have tossed a smoke canister on the platform to distract the rush hour crowd.
Police said the shooter was not in custody an hour and a half after opening fire at the 36th Street and Fourth Avenue station in Sunset Park around 8:30 a.m. They were combing through subway tunnels after some witnesses reported the shooter may have jumped to the tracks.
Two of the five shooting victims were said to have been seriously wounded.
Police described the suspected shooter as a man about 5 feet 5 inches tall and 180 pounds. They believed the gunman acted alone.
Experts have since said that the shooting appears to have been an orchestrated attack, though they caution that much could change as details develop.
