(CMR) Dr. Kwabena Asamoah has unexpectedly left the University College of the Cayman Islands after failed contract negotiations and a demotion after over 12 years with the organization. He was appointed Dean of Administration in August 2016. The unexpected departure means it is unknown who will be teaching his compliment of IT classes for the rest of the semester.
According to exclusive CMR sources the college's executive leadership decided to demote him from the position of dean back to associate professor. The demotion also included a significant reduction in salary; which was unacceptable to Asamoah. Some sources indicate it would have placed him back to the pay scale he would have started at some 12 years ago. He evidently attempted to unsuccessful negotiate that. It was announced last week that he would be leaving the organization and yesterday Thursday, October 31 was his last day. He left the island yesterday afternoon.
He also served as Acting Human Resources Manager starting in 2017 after the departure of Walling Whittaker from the organization. He was also in Chair of the Computer Science & Engineering Departments and IT internship coordinator.
According to the UCCI website, Dr. Asamoah joined the Department of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) of UCCI as an Associate Professor in August 2007. They claimed that Dr. Asamoah brought a wealth of teaching and consulting experience to the ICT department of UCCI after several years of teaching and consulting in the United States and Canada.
Prior to joining UCCI, Dr. Asamoah taught for seven years as an Associate Professor at the Department of Networks and Communications Management of DeVry University Georgia, in the United States. He also served as an adjunct faculty at the computer science department of Morehouse College in Atlanta. Before moving into academia, Dr. Asamoah worked with the Ministry of Science and Technology, Canada, as the Project Manager for the ministry's Y2K Compliance Initiative. He worked as an IT consultant for various IT companies in Canada and the United States. He holds two Masters Degrees in Engineering and Computer Science, and a PhD in engineering from the University of Ottawa, Canada.
