Heroes’ Day family fun day planned for Botanic Park
The Garden Club of Grand Cayman (GCGC) and the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park is preparing to host their annual fundraising event geared toward a family-friendly crowd on Sunday 24th January.
The Family Fun Day at Botanic Park hosts activities the whole family can enjoy, including games, arts and crafts, face painting, and a magic show. Starting at 10 am patrons can also participate in the annual tombola raffle and find a selection of locally grown plants on sale.
“The Family Fun Day has been a huge success in previous years. It is one of the biggest days for visitors to the Botanic Park,” said Garden Club member Jill Wood who is the Club’s Botanic Park Representative.
The event serves to bring attention to what the Park and the Garden Club offers the community while raising funds toward the completion of the Children’s Garden.
“There are many interesting things for children of all ages to enjoy; from games and races, information booths, and a Nature Table with interesting things found in the Cayman Islands. Children and adults always learn something about our environment which is important to all,” added Mrs. Wood.
There will also be a demonstration on simple flower arranging, traditional Silver Thatch plaiting, and Club members will be teaching children how to plant and look after their plants when they take them home.
“This event is always very popular as we see so many families out, and each year the Garden Club, our staff and volunteers all find it very rewarding,” said Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park General Manager, John Lawrus.
“Club members have committed to funding the maze and the sensory garden to be featured in the new Children’s Garden; they have worked hard in raising more than $30k over the last few years, and we couldn’t be more thankful for all they have done and continue to do for the Park,” he added.
In addition to all the fun nature activities, visitors will be entertained by local musicians and food and drink will be on sale by local vendors but most importantly, a portion of the Children’s Garden development will be open to the public for the first time!
“This includes the Cayman National Splashpad, and Giant Bird’s Nests, and the KRYS Discovery Pond, we encourage little ones to bring a bathing suit and towel. And we hope to see new and familiar faces out again this year in support of this important project,” explained Mr. Lawrus.
Family Fun Day is set for Sunday 24th January from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Admission is $5.00 for adults while children 12 and under is only $1.00. Self-guided Blue Iguana Conservation (BIC) tours are also available for an additional $5.00.
