“Overall, the global pandemic is improving, however, the regional variation indicates that continued efforts are still required.”

(CMR) The Ministry of Health and Wellness announced that Epidemiologist Rachel Corbett recently arrived from the UK and will be supporting the monitoring and reporting of infectious diseases in the Cayman Islands for the next 6 months.

Corbett has previously studied at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and worked as an Epidemiologist in the UK for over 6 years. She has experience at the local, national and international levels. She was the Assistant Director of Academic Programs at Emory University's Rollins Schools of Public Health.

During the pandemic, Rachel led the International Travel Risk Assessment team within the UK COVID-19 Incident Response to assess the risk of COVID-19 travelers faced when traveling abroad to any country in the world and inform government policy.

In other COVID-19 related news, this week's Public Health Spotlight on communicable and non-communicable diseases reveals a downward trend in international numbers with some regions including the eastern Mediterranean experiencing an increase. The number of new cases in Cayman decreased by 23 percent for Epi week 22 which covered the period of May 29-June 4.

The new daily average also fell from 81 to 62 representing a decrease of 23 percent. Despite this fall, the test positive rate remained stable at 25 percent with a 20 percent decrease in PCR tests being conducted. Hospitalizations went up slightly with seven new admissions and another 12 people requiring inpatient treatment.

A total of 53 children received the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine bringing the total number of vaccines given to children in the last two weeks to 182.
