(CMR) Eight persons will be honored with the newly established Order of the Cayman Islands during the National Heroes Day Celebrations set to take place over three days this year.
Four Officer and four Member awards will be conferred during the celebrations, which will take place in both Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac from Saturday, January 23 to Monday, January 25.
Cayman's seafaring heritage will take center stage at the 2021 event, aiming to help the Islands “reflect on the national heritage” and be “inspired for the future.”
The busts of three national heroes are also set to be unveiled at Heroes Square during the celebrations.
Celebrations will include parades by uniformed contingents at all the events on both islands; however, there will be no post-event entertainment this year at Heroes Square or Pedro St. James.
There will also be specially curated exhibits that will provide historical insights on both Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac.
One exhibit will be at the CI Seafarers Hall in Prospect, curated by the National Museum. The exhibition will be open to the public from Tuesday, 26 January 2021, for a month.
There will also be exhibits on display at the hall next door of the Veterans and Seamen Society of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.
To observe COVID-19 safety protocols, there will be a limit on the number of people who can attend the celebrations; attendance will be by invitation only.
However, to accommodate the general public, live coverage will be provided on Government’s YouTube channel from both Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac. The link to the channel is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGVlgTtKrEQHpXgoGNH_e7w/live or http://bit.ly/govkylive.
Chief of Protocol, Meloney Syms, said that although this year's events require greater planning, her team was happy to organize the events. She said,
“We are very happy to be organizing National Heroes Day celebrations, which this year, despite COVID 19, is an expanded event over the long weekend. It has called for greater planning and execution, and I am truly grateful for all involved who have risen so well to the occasion in the preparation and organization of all events on both Cayman Brac and Grand Cayman. I invite all to participate in all events, whether by invitation in person or by viewing on CIG’s live online presentations.”
The celebrations on the Cayman Brac will be held at 1 pm on Saturday at the Aston Rutty Centre.
The celebrations in Grand Cayman will be at Pedro St. James, Savannah, at 4 pm on Sunday for award recipients from Bodden Town, North Side, and East End.
On the National Heroes Day public holiday, Monday, the celebrations will be at Heroes Square, George Town, from 9 am, for George Town and West Bay recipients.
