(CMR) The daily press briefing today confirmed no new transmissions after an additional 48 tests have come back negative from the Health Services Authority lab. The most interesting aspect of the 37-minute press conference was the premier requesting the public to ease up on the memes that persons are making about him.
Whilst the memes have not focused solely on the premier alone he did address the fact that he had seen a number of them including a skit by Chad Bodden. He indicated that he had watched it at least 8 times and would appreciate people “easing upon them” because they were impacting his ability to concentrate during this most serious issue. He shared:
“I've ready had to speak to the Governor and the Commissioner about these memes because it has reached the point now where I am laughing so much I cannot concentrate on my work.”
Even local news reporters, Prince Charles and President Trump have been the subject of memes this week. The panel had a chuckle at the lighter moment of the briefing.
Memes are often satirical images with text to convey something thought to humous and is often goes viral quickly. People tend to address popular people and current news with memes.
On the more serious issues of the lockdown, the premier and governor both expressed overall satisfaction thus far. The premier confirmed that they were pleased with the result of the full-time curfew and that more details would be forthcoming on the shelter in place order. McLaughlin said that:
“far too many requests for exemptions and what will become the shelter in place provisions for purposes which are not essential”
were still being received by the government. However, he remains optimistic as it has now been a week since the first set of residents came back from the United Kingdom and thus far there is no more evidence of wide community spread of the COVID-19 disease.
One week since the first set of residence came back from the United Kingdom – no more evidence of community spread. He concluded if we would go another week without any additional positive results that would give him a great deal of optimism that the current strategy is working.
