(CMR) Dr. Dalton Errald Watler Lyon (Dalton Watler), the Deputy Chief Officer for Tourism, was arrested last Wednesday, May 5 on suspicion of money laundering by the Financial Crimes Unit of the Cayman Islands Police Service exclusive sources have shared with CMR.
Sources indicate that the allegation is connected to transactions between Cayman and Colombian and may also have a proceeds of crime/gambling component. He has been placed on required leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Watler is a long servicing civil servant and also serves on the Cayman Islands Special Olympics Committee. The former Head of the Department of Youth and Sports received his doctorate in 2008. He has a Doctor and Business Administration degree, majoring in Sports Tourism, from the Warnborough University in England.
Watler, 61, started off his career as a physical education teacher before obtaining his masters degree in Recreation and Park Management. He was born in Colombia to a East End father and Colombian mother and spent his first 28-years there.
When he first arrived in Cayman he worked as warehouse manager for a local grocery store.
He has long been an advocate of sports tourism. He is also an avid runner.
