(CMR) Months after being expelled from social media for his role in inciting the January 6 Capitol insurrection, former US President Donald Trump announced the launch of a new media company with its own social media platform, TRUTH Social.
Earlier this year, major social media firms, including Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, banned or suspended Trump for violating their policies. Trump has since indicated his intentions to create a rival social media platform.
According to a media release, Trump's new social network is set to launch a beta version in November, which will be available to invited guests only. Its national rollout is expected in the first quarter of 2022.
“I created TRUTH Social and TMTG to stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech. We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American President has been silenced,”” Trump said in the statement.
Internet trolls flooded TRUTH Social within hours of the new social media platform's announcement after Canadian hacker Aubrey Cottle posted a URL connecting a mobile beta that allowed them to register fake accounts.
They registered various handles connected to high-profile individuals, including Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence, and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, with several of the fake accounts posting troll content and obscene images. Within hours of the leak, TRUTH Social suspended account creation and removed all created users.
