(CMR) Close to fifty deportees from the United States arrived in Jamaica on Tuesday (April 21).
The arrival of the deportees comes after news broke last week that US President Donald Trump signed an order that imposes visa sanctions on countries that refuse to accept the deportation of their citizens.
Shortly after their arrival, the group was said to have been taken to a state-run COVID-19 facility, where they will stay for a period of 14 days.
“Update: Forty-six (46) IRMs (deportees) are set to arrive in JA from the US today. They will undergo COVID-19 screening and quarantined for two weeks in a facility appointed by the Gov't, ” read a tweet from the Ministry of National Security.
According to the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the deportees are expected to be screened daily by medical professionals.
After being tested at the end of the quarantine period, the deportees will be released to their families.
Initially, the US Embassy in Kingston had said that approximately 62 Jamaicans were scheduled to arrive on the island and would be tested for COVID-19 prior to their arrival.
On March 21, Jamaica closed its airspace to incoming passengers – as part of measures imposed by the government to contain the spread of COVID-19 locally.
