(CMR) Washington DC has been placed under curfew from 6 pm Wednesday to 6 am Thursday after protestors stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday.
The entire District of Columbia National Guard, which has over 1000 troops, has been deployed by the Army to the Capitol to help restore order.
Officials said the troops were being sent to the DC Armory and deployed to the Capitol and other Washington points.
Hundreds of pro-Trump protesters pushed through barriers set up along the Capitol's perimeter, smashing windows and storming their way into the Capitol Building on Wednesday, forcing the evacuation of several areas of the Capitol.
The protest disrupted the meeting of Congress where President-elect Joe Biden's win was set to be confirmed.
Vice President Mike Pence was also evacuated from Capitol, where he was to perform his role in counting electoral votes.
Mike Pence tweeted that he was not in support of the violent protest. He said:
“Peaceful protest is the right of every American but this attack on our Capitol will not be tolerated and those involved will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
President Donald Trump has since asked protestors to go home.
Washington D.C Police Chief Robert Contee described the protest as “unlawful riotous behavior.”
People have been warned to adhere to curfew to be prepared to face the consequences.
A woman shot during the protest on Wednesday has died. Thirteen people were arrested at the protest, where at least two explosive devices were found.
