(CMR) The Jamaican pastor arrested for allegedly indulging in cult practices that involved sacrificing members of his organization started the Pathway International Ministry after he was deported from Canada after being convicted of a sexual offense.
Kevin Smith was arrested on Sunday, October 17, after police were alerted that human sacrifices were being carried out at the St James church. The bodies of 39-year-old office worker Tanecka Gardner and an unidentified man were found with their throats slashed at the location. The police were reportedly fired on when they entered the church. A man who attacked the police was killed.
Jamaica's Director of Public Prosecution Paula Llewellyn said police confirmed that Smith, who was killed in a crash on Monday, October 25, was convicted in 2007 in Canada for the sexual assault of a 21-year-old man. He had migrated to the country in 1993 with his siblings. He returned to Jamaica in 2011 and reportedly started his Ministry after.
Recently there have been renewed calls for a sexual registry to be established in Jamaica as many persons convicted of sexual crimes continue to be around possible victims without persons knowing.
