(CMR) Six months after 53 dogs were seized, Sylvia Felicity Lewis (55) has been charged with five counts of animal cruelty.
The dogs were seized from her Prospect home in early May. Three of the charges will cover all 53 dogs while one relates to a Shihpoo and one relates to a rottweiler.
At the time it was shared by police that on Monday, May 6, 2019, RCIPS officers, acting on information provided by the Department of Agriculture’s (DOA) Animal Welfare Unit, executed a search warrant at a residence in the Prospect Area of George Town, together with animal welfare and control officers from the Department of Agriculture (DOA), and representatives of the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) and the Planning Department.
Lewis remains on police bail and is expected to make her first Summary Court appearance on Tuesday, 12 Nov.
Lewis remains in business and recently wrote to CMR after we featured her on our show two weeks ago – asking why no charges had yet been laid. She claims to be suffering from depression and that she had been punished enough already and had to continue to work to support herself.
There have been serious concerns that (1) she would not be charged and even if she is (2) the courts will be lenient with her and are unlikely to sentence her to deter this kind of behavior. Animal activists have said that the courts continue to send the wrong message about protecting animals in this community.
