(CMR) A co-conspirator, Lesme Romualdo Perez Ruiz (51), turned key prosecution witness took the stand today in the drug conspiracy case against Custom's Officer, David Lobo and provided some explosive testimony.
The witness corroborated much of the documentary evidence that the Crown had already presented late last week to support the conspiracy they are claiming occurred. Much of that testimony was alleged WhatsApp messages between the parties laying out the details of the transaction. There were also photos taken with a cell phone showing the drugs being cooked which Ruiz sent to his girlfriend. The Crown provided additional evidence against Logo including the organizing of flights and hotel accommodations as well as shopping for supplies the mules requires.
Luiz's testimony contradicted the testimony that Lobo provided to the police in his statements.
The Venezuelan man told the court that he was a travel agent owner in Medellin, Colombia and has ran a legit business for some years. He alleges that at some point, the parties were introduced and carried out one successful transaction of cocaine to the United States. It appears the ultimate goal was to transport the drugs there. He mentioned that first successful operation earlier in 2017 and was assisted by several Cayman Airways employees in the United States and carried out without any apparent issues. This was the first time that the alleged involvement of CAL staff was mentioned and it appeared to surprise many persons in court today. He did not know the name of the employee involved but gave a description of the person as provided by Lobo.
This witness recently changed his not guilty plea.
Lobo's attorney, Amelia Fosuhene is expected to cross exam the witness tomorrow.
Lobo has maintained that he was operating a business dealing with Colombian artifacts and it was in that context US$13,000 was paid to the parties.
