(CMR) Confirmed cases of the latest coronavirus, COVID-19 around the world has surpassed 1 million. The shocking new figures come from data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University. According to the data, COVID-19 has now infected at least 1,002,159 people around the world and has killed at least 51,484 people.
The data from the university is similar to data being reported by the Coronavirus Worldometer which is reporting 1001,079 confirmed cases of the virus and 51,385 deaths. The Worldometer relies on multiple data sources to track the coronavirus spread.
Just one day shy of a month ago, the tally for the world stood at 96,888, which means that the disease has spread rapidly. Particularly the United States has seen a dramatic increase in coronavirus cases with more than 200,000 confirmed cases. Confirmed cases in the US now account for more than 20% of infections globally. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday that the virus had infected more than 92,000 people in his state alone. Numbers coming out of the White House suggest that 100,000 to 240,000 people in the US will die from the virus.
A 55-year-old from the Hubei province in China was the earliest known case of the novel virus. The news was reported by the Soth China Morning Post on November 17, 2019, and in a matter of days, approximately 5 days, the confirmed cases moved from 27 to 60.
